‘Guardian Messengers - Flags of Hope’ is a new body of work consisting of hand embroidered International Maritime Signal Flags, each one crafted to represent an alphabetic messenger to transmit hope, love, protection and peace.

The work is inspired by the symbolism and protective power of talismans and is intended to safeguard and comfort the viewer during this particular shared moment in our history. Great changes are taking place in our world - environmentally, economically, scientifically, politically. These messengers are created to guide and help us through these often confusing times. The work should allow the viewer to take a break so that they can concentrate on the essentials, and maybe also bring a smile to their face.

On the sea each flag represents a letter of the English alphabet which also carries a message as a mean of transmission between ships. In the age of digital communication these flags are rarely used, but have a great historical and symbolic meaning. The actual flags of these messengers were sourced in India, and exude their own special charm because of their uneven sizes and handmade quality.

In our world, it is reassuring to know that there are still things that connect us to one another, such as the language of the sea. In creating this series, the artist has put a modern twist on an ancient tradition, while also drawing on her own personal experiences of living on a remote small Greek island which can only be reached by boats. Each flag is meticulously crafted by hand using traditional embroidery techniques, which gives them a unique texture and character, and serve as a reminder of our interconnectedness and the power of communication. They are a symbol of hope and a beacon of unity in a time when we need it most.

All flags have the approximate size of 32 x 17cm.

'Guardian Messengers: Flags of Hope' was sponsored as part of the cultural funding program 'Hessen kulturell neu eröffnen'.
